“Come take a stab at it faggot, I pre-ordered your casket.” This is just one of the many charming lyrics from 21-year-old American rapper Tyler, the Creator’s gimmicky homophobic repertoire.
If you don’t already know, Young Tyler is the leader of L.A. hip hop collective Odd Future – renowned for their violent, misogynistic and anti-gay lyrical shock tactics. But don’t accuse Tyler of being homophobic – he has like “gay friends” ya know.
With lines such as “I hate gays, gangbangers and fuckin’ jerkers” and “I’m stabbin’ any bloggin’ faggot hipster with a pitchfork,” I’m surprised Tyler, the Hater has friends, let alone gay ones. So I was even more intrigued to find out that not only one, but two of his Odd Future band mates are queer.
That’s like me krumping on stage with Jim Wallace from the Australian Christian Lobby as he raps about gay Nazi polygamists – seriously, what gives homos?
First, Syd tha Kyd, Odd Future’s boyish DJ/producer made it clear she dug chicks by getting fresh with a home girl in her music video, Cocaine. But if that wasn’t proof enough, Tyler’s lyric “Syd gay ass, putting her clit on other bitches nipples and shit whatnot” in the track Hi, kinda confirms your gaydar ain’t broke.
And just last week, Frank Ocean – Odd Future’s soul/R&B singer wrote a moving Tumblr post about how the first person he fell in love with was a guy.
When asked earlier this year about Odd Future’s controversial lyrics, all Syd had to say was, “If you don’t like it, don’t listen to it.” Fucking cop out, girlfriend! Whatever happened to self R-E-S-P-E-C-T?
Some commentators believe this is evidence Odd Future’s homophobic reputation is unwarranted, despite their heavy-handed use of the term “faggot”. This commentator calls bullshit.
Last year Sara Quin of Tegan and Sara wrote an open letter criticising the entertainment industry for celebrating the misogynistic, anti-gay lyrics of Tyler, the Creator – to which he replied on Twitter, “If Tegan and Sara need some hard dick, hit me up!”
Tyler is an antagonist twerp who needs to grow the fuck up.
Kudos to the LGBT protesters who got Odd Future scrapped from New Zealand’s Big Day Out in January. Pity the organisers of the NSW government funded Vivid LIVE festival didn’t make such a call in 2011 when Tyler and co (dis)graced the Opera House. I love knowing my taxpayer dollars help perpetuate hate.
I like Odd Future…and Tyler is a very creative young lad….Now…You people are only feeding his notoriety by complaining about his lyrics..He is obviously out to shock and anyone who calls themselves a fan would not take his lyrics quite the way that you guys have…I am a 37 yr old gay man and i personally am not offended but as Syd said…”if you don’t like it…don’t listen” Odd future are not often played on the radio and you would have to seek out his music to listen to it…I find myself offended by the rubbish i hear pouring from every commercial radio station…easy fix…I don’t listen to the radio…get over it!!
Nice work Mon.
Disgraceful on the government’s behalf.
