Generation Google

Beau climbed into the front seat and pulled the door shut.

‘So when are we going to the gallery Dad?’

‘We can go anytime you like, we have two weeks off’.

‘Well, I need to see the Margaret Prestons’

A day later we were strolling around the Art Gallery of NSW, the boys were taking snaps of Preston with their iPads. A lady came up and praised the boys for their interest and asked if they liked anyone the most. They both answered with Margaret.

She was pretty floored over their interest, I just took it as the school teaching the kids a wide spectrum. I am interested in art, so saw it as a given.

The boys grew up loving their Salvador Dali bedtime story book, they love Preston, they’re able to name a league of Australian artists, such as Olley and Boyd, and have just added Gleeson to their repertoire.

These guys have got such a great life ahead of them. I’m not talking about perceived economic privilege, but for their experience of life with technology.

The iPad has enabled them to learn far greater than what I did when I was growing up. Information is at their fingertips, they are definitely the Google generation.

Though, boys will be boys. Tonight while I was cooking dinner, I could hear them arguing and teasing something in the corner of the lounge room. There was a lot of laughing and I went over.

‘Hey…what are you guys up to?’

‘We’re talking to Siri Dad…she’s stupid’.

Yup. Kids. Teasing virtual help programs but won’t set the table.
