Sex Geekdom… WTF?

Sex Geekdom… WTF?

What on earth is ‘Sex Geekdom’, I hear you say? Let me reassure you that it’s not a comic con style of event where geeks from around the world gather to talk about which super hero is the sexiest, and nor is it a singles speed dating night for geeks who like sex.

It is in fact a sex-positive community of individuals who are passionate and curious in relation to learning about all things that are sex and sexuality. It is about the sharing of knowledge and information with like minded folks which helps build a community that encompasses sex-positive ideas, intellectual curiosity and the occasional balls joke!

Kate McCombs said she created Sex Geekdom “because I feel happier, more productive, and connected when I regularly interact with other people who are passionate about sexuality, sexual health, and making the world a more sex-positive place”.

Since the Melbourne group was created, Sex Geekdom communities in Sydney, Los Angeles and Madison, Wisconsin have popped up, and the online component of Sex Geekdom allows sex educators, researchers and anyone who identifies as a sex geek to share their wealth of knowledge and engage with others about sex and sexual health.

So what exactly is a sex geek? Well, firstly, a sex geek, or sex nerd as they are known in some circles, is an identification used by many people is the sex-positive community to describe their unusual, academic, and/or voracious interest in sexual knowledge. This interest extends well beyond that which would simply improve one’s own sex life. While clearly this kind of scholarship would likely lead to better sex for the individual, sex geeks like to learn about sex for the sake of learning about sex.

Guess what? There are Sex Geekdom events! The Sex Geekdom events are social gatherings that happen every few weeks at a bar in the city. It is where sex geeks and those interested in becoming a sex geek can get together and chat about all things sex, sexual health and sexuality related.

It is not unusual to see a bunch of people from a multitude of health and non-health related fields having discussions about female ejaculation or the sex mating habits of echidnas. You do not have to be knowledgeable about sexual health or sexuality to come along and participate, but you do have to have a great curiosity and a willingness to learn.

If you are interested in being part of the Sex Geekdom community, if you want to attend one of their events, or if you want to get more information then check out  or like their Facebook page at
