POLL: Courier-Mail controversy

QUEENSLAND’S Courier Mail newspaper has been accused of “sickening” transphobic sensationalism and faced a deluge of criticism following today’s front page and their reporting on the death of a Brisbane trans woman.

The story of 27-year-old Mayang Prasetyo’s alleged murder by her partner Marcus Volke in the inner-Brisbane suburb of Teneriffe shocked the country as gruesome details of her death, and Volke’s suicide after he fled the police, were revealed yesterday.

Police have not yet confirmed the identity of Prasetyo but friends and family of the cabaret performer — who also earned an income as a sex worker to support her family back in Indonesia — have expressed their grief on social media |

  1. Scumbag rag , the companion to Sydney Daily Terror. The sooner these filth rags close down the better. Australia’s collective intelligence will rise immediately. The family should sue .

  2. Typical commentary from liberal minded editor. I always wondered how they would report a death of a person who doesn,t fit the stereotypical “wonderful person” role. Makes me ill, sensationalised craptrap.I am once again making the choice not to read their version of the news. Others should boycott this newspaper. As previously noted by others, this type of news should be reported with respect

  3. Who is to blame? The voracious public desperate for sensationalism. Whatever. Why. Whoever. It is beyond tragic. It’s not about gender. Occupation. Ethnicity. It’s about violence and craziness. Bless both their souls. Poor humans.

  4. sack them, boycott the crap paper, the owner of this vile rag is the same one who deleted messages off a dead girls mobile, then cramming it with messages from these vile mordoch reporters, giving the girls family hope….vile, lock them up

  5. Disgusting. Totally degrading and dehumanizing to her and her family. That paper should do more than apologies, and that filth of a writer should be fired.

  6. She called herself a shemale and that’s fine. No problem when any queer reclaims any slur. But clearly the paper used the term to deride and sensationalise. Not much we can do though because it’s response will always be: she called herself shemale. Personally I have no issue with queers using that term at all, only when anti-queers haters use it

  7. These sub humans who call themselves journalists have absolutely no ethics or compassion and should resign. I don’t know how these people can go home at night and face their families, let alone sleep at night. Gutter press!

  8. He should be sacked. It’s c$nts like him that make all the southern states think of us as backward rednecks. The scary thing is the volume of qlders that buy this rag support that ethos.

  9. Unfortunately she seems to have used the term herself, if the paper is to be believed. Still doesn’t make their front page headline ethical or fair to other trans women.
‘Mayang Prasetyo was charging up to $500 an hour for her services, marketing herself online as a “top high-class Asian shemale’’.’

    • Most likely because she was a new resident in western society,
In Indonesia there isn’t as much of a focus on political correctness when referring to a “Ladyboy or a Shemale” They call themselves that due to being constantly referred as that by westerners :/

      Unfortunate :(

  10. I dont remember the last time I ever read a newspaper, any newspaper. They are dying a slow death and will sensationalise anything to get a few last gasps of life.

  11. Oh No don’t tell me a newspaper Sensationalized its headlines !! Whatever has become of this world ?!?!

  12. Absolute disgusting gutter journalism which obviously the Editor approved ! Was the lowest of the low.

  13. No doubt. This story was covered in a disgraceful manner. That said, so was the reporting on ninemsn.com.au, news.com.au, TheHeraldSun and many more. A number of the main media outlets took eachothers angles and built on them… in the wrong direction!!! An example of appauling and unforgivable media coverage. They should all be held accountable!

    • Exactly! Once again, the Murdoch Media Empire proves that it is run by someone that is not a “fit and proper person” to hold that position.

  14. Without doubt. Brisbane Times was able to report on the tragedy with respect, why couldn’t ‘ճԹpaper of the year’?

    • “ճԹ paper of the year”
Really .. They got an award thing ?
I hope they are rolling in their own masturbation juices over that because I can’t see how a paper that’s full of shit and lies even gets such an award ..
