ACON: Northern exposure
Winter is upon us and though we experience a milder season than our southern cousins, it still gets nippy in the Northern Rivers region of NSW. So, what better way to shake off any chills with a good old carpet-cutting dance!
The annual Queen’s Birthday weekend party will be hosted by the fabulous Tropical Fruits Inc on Saturday, June 11. The party, titled Homecoming Queen, will star local Bundgalung queen Destiny Haz Arrived. This intimate party will be held in the charming Jiggi Hall.
It’s a great chance to dance off any potential winter blues and to meet people in a safe GLBT welcoming environment. It’s also a great chance for me to remind all of their sexual health via our new ACON health promotion campaign, Drama Down Under.
The inaugural Dr Tania Lienert Memorial Lecture for Social Justice and Diversity will be held at Southern Cross University on Thursday, June 30, 6pm. This is a community event to honour her life and work. The inaugural lecture will be delivered by renowned writer and human rights activist Arnold Zable.
Tania was an activist, feminist, researcher, community and health services specialist and environmentalist. The event will highlight aspects of her interests and work for social justice, diversity, the lesbian community, feminism, compassion and participation. This event is also designed to encourage people to think about our ideals and our community, our responsibilities to others, how we each can contribute and how we can open our hearts and minds to collectively make a difference to our communities.
ACON Northern Rivers looks forward to having a vibrant presence at NAIDOC Week (first week of July) where we always have an information stall and engage with the local Indigenous communities around sexual health and diversity. ACON has a range of Indigenous-specific resources and cool safe-sex packs for both men and women. NAIDOC Day in Lismore is on Thursday, June 30 at Heritage Park, 10am-2pm.
