Rudd’s daughter backs gay marriage

Marriage equality advocates have welcomed the support of Jessica Rudd, the daughter of Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd.

”I believe in marriage equality and I just don’t understand why we’re still having this debate,” Jessica Rudd told the Sydney Morning Herald.

Australian Marriage Equality national convenor Alex Greenwich welcomed her comments.

“Ms Rudd is reflecting the views of not only a majority of Australians, but a clear majority of her generation,” he said.

“80 percent of young Australians want their gay and lesbian friends to be treated equally in all areas of the law, and that includes in the Marriage Act”.

Greenwich said he was hopeful Rudd’s comments will have an impact on her father’s decision when the issue comes to a vote.

“As Foreign Minister, Kevin Rudd has done a lot of for GLBTIQ community. We are sure this will continue and are hopeful he will also support marriage equality”

In his role as Foreign Minister, Kevin Rudd has overseen the introduction of new guidelines to make it easier for sex and gender diverse people to get a passport in their preferred gender, has filmed an ‘It Gets Better’ video to

combat anti-gay bullying, and his department will soon begin to issue Certificates of Non Impediment to same-sex couples wishing to marry overseas.

  3. One family at a time, we will get there. I imagine it was an interesting Christmas for the Rudds on this issue … wonder if Loree has also walked out on the family? What about Margaret Court’s rellies?

  4. Jessica Rudd has been brave going against her Aunty, who said those who support equality are like the Gestapo. Soon, we will have full equality, and the views of people against equality will be confined to study, in the same we now study the White Australia Policy. As my local Anglican Bishop said, 鈥淲e will one day look back and say how could people of been so nasty towards good people鈥.

Scientist can clone gay fruit flies and lesbian mice. I cannot imagine a God, who would create some of us as homosexual and say his creation is wrong. If homosexual animals can be cloned, and are still homosexual, clearly we are as God made us. This is perhaps why Jesus never said a word against gay couples who were married around him. It is why the early church was very accepting of us. The story of Sodom and Gomorrah is of male rape, of offering your daughters up to strangers. It is the story of being rude to others much like I see the Christian Lobby doing, in their pursuit of unchristian like behaviour. For generations some have used the Bible for their own power. If the Christian Lobby truly believed homosexuality is a sin, then why not go after the greatest sin idolatry? I struggle to see artciles about that in their publications. The answer lies in the need for some to unite against a common enemy. If one is not around, they make one. The money flows in when this happens! There talk is that we are attacking a public institution, attacking a way of life, attacking the existence of each congregation member. I thought divorce might be a greater attack on Marriage! In short, the Christian Lobby does not engage in Christ like behaviour. I hardly think loudly applauding an American Far Right Evangalical, standing up in the Great Hall of our Parliament, calling the unborn baby of Penny Wong, the Greatest Evil, is what Jesus would be doing. I do not know any Christians who would think Jesus would join in for a bit of hate cries.

The majority of Christians, as we know form the Polls, support Marriage Equality. They support us living as freely as the next person . They want us included in the Federal Equal Opportunity Act and want discrimination to end. There are some Christians, a minority, who do not agree about divorce, the role of women in the Church, or even interracial marriage. There are some Churches who only recently accepted people who were not white, and this is ironic when you think about what was the colour of Jesus skin. Not white, and he would not have been blond either or blue eyed. So we should not get too caught up in the weeds of the Christian Lobby tired old rhetoric, and look at some of the many positives such as Jessica Rudd coming out to stand with us, as so many people are now doing.

To quote from an Anglican Arch-Bishop, and someone who really understood discrimination.

鈥淭o penalise someone because of their sexual orientation is like what used to happen to us; to be penalised for something which we could do nothing [about] 鈥 our ethnicity, our race. I would find it quite unacceptable to condemn, persecute a minority that has already been persecuted.鈥 Nobel Peace Prize winner and Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
