Queensland PrEP trial to expand following landmark collaboration

In a landmark partnership between the Queensland AIDS Council (QuAC) and the HIV Foundation Queensland (HIVFQ), the state鈥檚 current trial, QPrEP, will expand from its existing size of 150 participants.
The news announced today comes after talks were held between the three stakeholders , given progress in other states and calls from health experts and the community.
鈥淲e want to work together to grow this number to give even more Queenslanders a chance to benefit from this important medication and prevent the spread of HIV in our state.鈥�
Dick announced the formation of a working group between the government, QuAC and HIVFQ to work on rolling out the expanded trial.
鈥淭his group will commence work within the next 14 days and I expect them to make recommendations to government regarding an expansion of the project within two months.鈥� he said.
QuAC Executive Director Michael Scott said the expansion will help Queensland reach national goals of ending new HIV transmissions.
鈥淭o reach the 2020 goal of zero new HIV notifications, all prevention mechanisms must be embraced, including increased access to PrEP,鈥� he said.

HIVFQ Chair Dr Darren Russell, who oversaw the first stages of the QPrEP trial said that the proof that PrEP works is already there.
鈥淭he Foundation has long championed the evidence around treatment as prevention for HIV, from both a clinical and community perspective,鈥� Russell said.
鈥淭he evidence around PrEP is clear and a rapid scale up of access to PrEP for Queenslanders is essential to end new HIV transmissions by 2020.

Dick repeated his call for the federal government to act on finally approving PrEP.
鈥淲ith this project and this tablet, we have a strong chance of further reducing the number of new HIV cases we see in Queensland,鈥� Dick said.
鈥淏ut the best way for PrEP to become widely available and accessible to those who need it is through its approval by the Therapeutic Goods Administration and listing on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

It’s truly amazing how many times Queensland can make announcements about PrEP that don’t deliver anything. Darren Russel must have announced three times that the HIV Foundation would be offering free PrEP last year and nothing came of it. Now the Health Minister announces a committee!! has the PrEP trial even started yet? When is Queensland going to put a pill into somebodies hand?
Exactly correct, it is the same Queensland Labor government (who have promised 3 LGBT topics in there 2015 state election manifesto) by implementing an equal age of consent, an expungement scheme and abolition of the gay panic defence – and they had over a year to do it, but no bills introduced as of yet on those! Time is ticking away and the next Queensland election will be in early 2018!
Queensland is a so called hung parliament state at the moment, so the Labor government is treading very carefully indeed! They just do not want to upset the LNP, the 2 Katter party members and the 2 conservative independents!
