South Australia apologises to the LGBTI community

SOUTH Australian Premier Jay Weatherill has formally apologised to the LGBTI community in parliament for past legislative injustices, saying he hopes LGBTI youth have a safer future.
The move comes in light of a number of that, if passed, will advance equality for sexual and gender diverse people around the state.
This includes laws that will make it easier for people to change the gender marker on their birth certificate and for same-sex couples to jointly adopt.
In his apology, Weatherill said that discriminating against a particular group of people in law sends the wrong message.
鈥淲hen our laws discriminate against a particular group of people, it sends a message that this prejudice written into law justifies treating people differently in our day to day lives,鈥� he said.
鈥淪uch laws don鈥檛 affect only LGBTI communities, they diminish our society as a whole.
鈥淭hey diminish us by saying effectively there are certain people who deserve to be treated differently 鈥� whose relationships are worth less, whose families should not exist, and who are not entitled to the same fundamental rights as their neighbour.鈥�
Weatherill added that many South Australians, both within and outside of the LGBTI community, had written to him to express their support for the various law reforms underway.
鈥淲e should be building a safer, fairer future for the next generation of children, so they never have to experience the kind of fear and harm that was a reality for people who grew up when homosexuality was a crime,鈥� he said.
鈥淲e should ensure that our laws apply equally regardless of who you fall in love with, who your family is, or the gender you live as.
鈥淭oday as Premier and as a member of parliament, I formally say sorry to all of you who have suffered injustices and indignities simply because of who you are.鈥�
Members of the LGBTI community and their families gathered at parliament to hear the apology, including trans woman Zoey Campbell who applauded the apology.
鈥淭his apology will help start to heal a lifetime of being criminalised, medicalised, and stigmatised, and helps me start to feel accepted and valued by the community I live in,鈥� she said.
鈥淲e have a long way to go, but the Premier鈥檚 words are an historic step towards acceptance and help pave the way towards true equality.鈥�
Director of Advocacy at the Human Rights Law Centre, Anna Brown, said the speech helped to recognise the harm done by the past discriminatory laws.
鈥淭his apology is a powerful symbolic act that helps to repair the harm caused by these unjust laws and affirms the dignity and value of LGBTI people and their families,鈥� she said.
鈥淭aken together, these legislative reforms represent an enormous step forward for LGBTI equality in South Australia, and will make important practical differences to the lives of many people.鈥�

So true Robert 14 years of nothing while Labor was in state government. Trans* Birth Certificate Bill and the Relationship Register Bill passed into law credit to you South Australian Government. However still long waiting for the surrogacy/IVF and adoption bills to pass the upper house of South Australia. These two bills might just fail because of “conscience votes” that means votes are not a guarantee. Still long waiting for South Australia to abolish the gay panic defence as well.
Jay Weatherill has been a Member od the SA Parliament since 2002. He has been a Minister in the State ALP Government of SA since the ALP won in 2002. He has been the Premier since 2011.
And just what did Jay do for my LGBTIQ Community of SA, or indeed Australia,, during the past 14 long years?
The Answer is very, very simple:.
He did Nothing.
He knows that there is a State Election in just 15 months time. His pathetic excuse for a wasteful, spendthrift, inefficient alleged “Government is under one of the deepest, darkest clouds any State or Federal Government has ever been.
Weatherill has completely Failed the Children of SA. Remember he was, before he became Premier, the Minister whose portfolio covered Child Protection. He failed. Every Minister and CEO he has appointed to Child Protection has been a complete Failure. He spent untold millions re-naming his department, hiring a new CEO only to have them allow at least 11 staff who had been “Red-Carded” by the Royal Commission into Child Sex Abuse to continue in work.
As I say, it is just 15 months until the 2018 State Election so Weatherill is now scrambling to attract as many votes as he can to survive. Having alienated almost the entire Voting Population of SA he suddenly discovers the LGBTIQ Community so he trots out his insincere, hypocritical apology. He has had 4 State Elections over the last 14 years to make that apology.
Don’t believe a word of it.
