Eddie McGuire defends the AFL’s decision to support a “yes” vote
The Footy Show host Sam Newman has attacked the AFL for its support of marriage equality.
The AFL this week the signage outside its headquarters to a 鈥榶es鈥� logo backing marriage equality.
Newman called the AFL 鈥渙bsequious, fawning, sycophantic political whores鈥� with 鈥渘o right to get involved in political messages鈥�, has reported.
鈥淲hat gives you the right to tell people and to put on the football what people should do?鈥� he said.
鈥淜eep your contrived and conflicted snouts out of people鈥檚 lives. All you鈥檙e doing is virtue signalling, making yourselves look grand.鈥�
The tirade sparked a heated debate with co-host Eddie McGuire, who said the football community was filling a vacuum created by lack of political leadership.
鈥淭here鈥檚 an old saying, if you don鈥檛 stand for something you stand for nothing,鈥� said McGuire.
鈥淲hat we have in our world at the moment, Sam, is a leadership vacuum with politicians who don’t do anything unless there’s a vote in it.
“We have media who are running agendas to get whatever they want. We’ve got churches that have completely lost any credibility in what they stand for.
“But the AFL these days is an organisation that people do look to.”
McGuire said the AFL鈥檚 鈥榶es鈥� sign was symbolic of inclusion and equality.
鈥淚f you鈥檙e a 14 or 15-year-old and you鈥檙e gay, you can come to a football club and be part of it,鈥� he said.
鈥淪hut up, Ed,鈥� replied Newman. 鈥淚t鈥檚 nothing about gays, it鈥檚 about political agendas.鈥�
The “yes” logo outside AFL headquarters was removed after less than a day, following a threatening phone call.
