Story Bridge to light up in rainbow colours for IDAHO

Story Bridge to light up in rainbow colours for IDAHO

BRISBANE’S Story Bridge will for the first time be lit in rainbow colours specifically for an LGBTI cause in May in a move that has been widely welcomed by the LGBTI community.

Brisbane Council announced this morning that one of the city’s most iconic landmarks will shine with colours from the pride flag to commemorate the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) on May 17.

Council’s Field Services Committee chairman, Cr David McLachlan, broke the news on Brisbane radio this morning.

This news comes following yesterday’s heated debate in council’s Question Time, where another suggestion raised by Cr Victoria Newtown to raise the pride flag at City Hall for IDAHO was shot down by Lord Mayor Graham Quirk – who stated he prefered “actions rather than symbols” when it came to representing the Brisbane LGBTI community.

Lighting the Story Bridge in rainbow colours has been an ongoing issue for council, with the suggestion of lighting the bridge during the Brisbane Pride Festival later this year raised by Newton in December聽reportedly met with laughter from other councillors in the chamber.

The Star Observer has contacted the Mayor’s office for comment. More to come.

  1. That is great to hear, Jacob.

It is a shame that this does not apply to all members of BCC given the recent issue over the proposed billboard for the upcoming film festival.

  2. Contrary to popular belief – Brisbane is quite a progressive city with this issue. There are always the rednecks (perhaps a slightly disproportionate amount for this area of the country) but the overwhelming majority are part of a progressive mindset. Our LNP member Robert Cavallucci opened the recent Pride March and we’ve plenty of support. Teresa Gambaro is the Brisbane CBD LNP shining light in Marriage Equality and intelligent debate. Brisbane has lots of support from even seemingly unlikely sources.
