Queensland partners with leading Canadian HIV experts in an Australian first

IN yet another landmark聽announcement made during the AIDS 2014 conference, the Queensland Government has revealed they are joining forces with leading international experts from Canada to build their efforts to聽end聽HIV.

The Australian first will see a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Queensland Health Department, HIV Foundation Queensland (HIVFQ) and the British Columbia Centre for Excellence (BC-CfE) in a combined effort to reduce transmission of HIV in Queensland.

The MoU was signed this morning by Queensland Health Minister Lawrence Springborg, HIVFQ chair Dr Darren Russell and BC-CfE Director Dr Julio Montaner at the 20th International AIDS Conferecne聽in Melbourne.

It will see the development of a partnership to enable a HIV treatment as prevention (TASP) strategy to be delivered in Queensland.

This particular strategy also allows for HIV antiretroviral therapy to be聽offered immediately to people living with HIV who are eligible and want聽to commence treatment.

鈥淕etting people onto HIV treatment early also decreases HIV transmission and new cases of HIV,鈥 Dr Russell said.

鈥淎s part of the strategy, we are committed to achieving increased treatment uptake. We are aiming for 90 per cent of people living with HIV to be on treatment.

鈥淭he foundation is also really keen to work with partners and key stakeholders to promote the TASP strategy in Queensland to ensure we achieve the best possible outcomes.鈥

The MoU meant that the co-signing organisations were agreeing to work together to formalise a research collaboration to develop new research and HIV programs over three years,” according to Dr Russell.

鈥淲e will partner to develop, implement and evaluate the Queensland TASP initiative and other related HIV health research,鈥 he said.

This particular TASP strategy was introduced by Dr Montaner in 2006 at the Toronto International AIDS Conference, which is believed to have lead to AIDS being virtually eliminated, thanks to a聽marked decrease in the spread of new HIV infections in British Columbia.

Dr Montaner said that the strategy had significant implications for Queensland.

鈥淭his model is based on scientific evidence. We know from the success we鈥檝e had with TASP, it holds the promise of eliminating HIV and AIDS in our lifetime,” he said.

Springborg welcomed the MoU, the first of its kind for Australia at an international level, and said that the partnership was a milestone for the ongoing fight against HIV in Queensland and rolling out effective treatment.

鈥淸The MOU] provides Queensland with the opportunity to lead the development, implementation and evaluation of TASP in Australia. We believe this will have significant impacts on national and international efforts working towards the virtual elimination of HIV,” he said.

  1. Hi,its been 1 month now when i met Dr,Odetokun and i have been perfectly fine. MY name is becky smith,i had contacted
HIV/AID since i was 21yrs and i never know that i was HIV positive until i went for a competition in my school after
they tested me and found out that i was positive they told me to back out from the competition,it was not even that
which was surprising but that i had contacted HIV.
I started seeking for help in different hospital and churches but there was no effective response to my sick state.
it was a friend of mine that took me to Dr.Odetokun who saved my life and my future. His technique in healing is unique
and adequate also it responds to your body perfectly. You can also contact him a be cured too, here is his email
address:[email protected] or +2348134594549.TO my surprise,THE next Monday i went to the hospital for test and
the doctor look at me surprisingly and told me i was negative. I felt blessed to have known him.

  2. This is rubbish. This education/prevention expertise exists in Australia & we have some of the smartest most creative gay men and HIV educators in the world – plus people with HIV get this treatment access already – there is nothing that the Canadian model can teach us. This is simply the Qld govt refusing to participate in the Australian HIV response and it is shameful for Dr Russel to collude with this. This should be a story about scandalous and expensive stupid Qld politicians…

    • What a silly response. Why shouldn’t QLD use all that’s available to them. If everyone just got over the fact that, shock horror, a liberal government is actually interested in investing in this area, groups like the HIV Foundation and others would be able to get on with it. People grandstanding and saying ridiculous things like “the QLD govt is refusing to participate” is getting a bit tired.

  3. Be even better if Queensland Health and the HIV Foundation Queensland were actually visibly doing HIV Promotion/Prevention work throughout the State of Queensland and explain how they are reaching GLBTI people especially now regarding this new MoU initiative !
