Brisbane to cherish new gay bar
Billed as a decadent venue for grown-ups, a new regular event on Sundays in Brisbane’s centre promises to become the next big thing amongst the city’s gay community.
Cherish Brisbane at Zuri Bar will be officially launched on Sunday, November 17 with a live jazz band, classic cocktails and Asian inspired cuisine in a setting that has been described as opulent, stylish and elegant.
Scott Anthony, the man behind Cherish Brisbane, told the Star Observer that the fast-growing city was crying out for a venue like Zuri Bar and a regular weekend session removed from the club scene.
“Brisbane has been missing a meeting place for the gay community without strobe lights, disco balls and outdated decor,” he said.
“Cherish Brisbane at Zuri Bar provides a place to meet, mingle and socialise over a decadent cocktail.
“With classy entertainment, red leather couches, ornate chandeliers and the masculine Napoleon statue overlooking the main bar, Zuri Bar is the new place to meet like-minded men every Sunday.”
Along with a live jazz band, guests will be able to dance the night away each weekend with live DJs until late.

Rocky (my workmate) went to this new “gay” event – Cherish Brisbane at Zuri Bar on Saturday night…. Rocky is aboriginal and Lesbian…. and does so much in the LGBT community in Brisbane. Anyways…. she told me this story this morning…
She tried to enter Zuri Bar for Cherish Brisbane, (dressed to the hilt, chinos and nice button up shirt – as she is aware its a well-to-do venue, therefore she dressed accordingly) the promoter stopped her at the stairs and said to her (wait for it) – “I’m sorry but you are not the clientele we want at this event” (yes he really said that) and refused her entry… until he was accused of discrimination (by two white women) and then decided to allow her to go in saying it would be “just this once”. I thought it might have been because this was a men’s only event (even though it wasn’t advertised as such) however Rocky told me when she finally made it inside there were 7 other women inside… So it was obviously a racist thing… nice one Zuri Bar & Dining – They might want to reconsider allowing pretentious promoters to run events at the venue. It’s 2013 not 1960.
I wish we had somewhere like this in Sydney!
