Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has raised eyebrows after appearing at Mardi Gras and seeming to congratulate himself for the marriage equality postal survey.

鈥淚t was like the nation gave same-sex couples an enormous hug,” Turnbull said during the broadcast.

“It was a vote for equality, a vote for respect and what a huge vote it was.”

Turnbull appeared during the parade鈥攖o booing鈥攁fter the Dykes on Bikes and Boys on Bikes, later snapping a selfie with .

Social media users immediately hit back.

鈥淲e did it despite you, not with you,鈥 tweeted one person.

鈥淣o other photos of Turnbull at Mardi Gras have appeared. Nobody but Cher was fooled by him,鈥 posted another.

Some people tweeted at Cher directly about Turnbull and the harm caused by the marriage equality debate.

鈥淚 urge you to say something about Malcolm Turnbull and renounce the photo that you had with him at Mardi Gras because he doesn’t care about gay people,鈥 wrote one person.

The Goddess of Pop and prolific tweeter engaged with the discussion, asking for more information about Turnbull鈥檚 relationship with the LGBTI community.

鈥淭he man you talked to is a liar,鈥 tweeted one person.

鈥淗e illegally detains refugees/asylum seekers who are PoC in off-shore concentration camps were they are tortured, abused and killed. He speaks only in support of Trump.

鈥淗e ensured LGBTIQ people were taunted and abused for months last year. Sorry.鈥

Cher was quick to reply, saying she was sorry.

鈥淎m so sorry. Guess that鈥檚 why I have few friends who are politicians. He seemed very open and excited about Mardi Gras and LGBTI community,鈥 she posted.

During his appearance at the parade, Turnbull seemed to thank the original 1978 Mardi Gras protest for his own marriage.

鈥淚t’s 40 years old, and 40 years ago Lucy and I had our first date, so our love affair is a result of Mardi Gras,鈥 he told reporters.

  1. Typical far left bulls*t.. The Gay community got marriage equality and no one can ever say that the will of the Australian people have not been heard.

No doubt it was hard and unnecessary but the reality is without Malcolm Turnbull this would not have happened as Rudd, Gillard did nothing for same sex marriage.

I certainly don’t want the gay community to just rely on Labor and the Greens as if we do that then we will be repeating the mistakes of the US gay community who rely on the Democrats and look where they are no because they have not tried to get support within Republican ranks.

    • If the Lieberals had just once allowed a conscience vote on any one of the private members bills that had been tabled in the decade previously we would not have needed the survey so your comment is worthless.

  2. The real problem seems to be the Christian lobby, whom politicians on both sides seem afraid of alienating, and losing their votes.
I don’t see why Cher should apologise. What could she have done otherwise- snub the P.M. of Australia, and have the mainstream press attack her? How could she have known all of the political nuances of another country? She was just being her lovely friendly self.

  3. Says he supported SSM and spent the last days arguing for filthy far right amendments. He was used as a ruse over republic. Doesn’t stand for anything just an opportunist.

  4. To All those who keep using the words ‘The Gay Community’ and the like.

    PLEASE desist Immediately.

As a Member of this Community who is Not Gay, but is Trans, PLEASE remember this Community is NOT just about Gay People or Gay Issues. Personally Last Years bottom half was hell on earth for me. I had my own mailbox ripped off my fence and thrown through my window after someone objected to the Rainbow and Trans Flags being on Dispaly in my Yard, death threats in my mailbox were also left and I got jumped and left with a cracked rib.
Worst of all 3 of the Most Beautiful People are now gone, after it all became too much for them. The ‘Great Debate’ as I refer to it, was not the Sole Cause in their Decesion, but it was in at least all 3 of these cases the straw that broke their backs and made everything too much to bear (all were in my age range 30s to late 40s).

Its called LGBTIQ or LGBTIQ+ for a Reason, please remember that.

One of the Reasons that I have such Pride at being Part of this Community is the feeling of Unity it has as a Group. The Support that we show to one another in times of trouble, even if Complete Strangers is Universal, Please don’t let us loose that.

  5. If Malcolm Turnbull had not gone ahead with that Postal Survey we would still not have the Right to Equality in Marriage – or many other things as well.
To see Bill Shorten and Tanya Plibersek prancing about during the Mardi Gras Parade was sickening. Ever since the results of the Postal Survey came out Shorten has been trying, for purely politically opportunists reasons, to make out that it was all his idea in the first place and that it was thanks to him and the ALP that we have now been granted our Right to Marry.
Nothing could be further from the Truth.
Ever since Shorten entered the Parliament he has been a vehemently vocal OPPONENT of Same Gender/Sex Marriage.
It should never be forgotten, with Shorten, Plibersek and Wong never being allowed to forget it, that the ALP was OPPOSED to Same Gender/Sex Marriage. The ALP was in power in Canberra for SIX Years. With the help of the Greens they had control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. At any time during those SIX YEARS they could have amended the Australian Marriage Act.
    They did NOTHING.
No matter what our individual political beliefs may be, Malcolm Turnbull has every Right to claim the credit for giving the GLTBIQ Community the Right to Marry. Indeed we are obligated to give him that credit for if it had, as so many claimed they wanted, been left up to the politicians, including Shorten, Plibersek and Wong in the Federal Parliament those changes to the Australian Marriage Act would never have been passed and, even if there is to be a change of government in Canberra in 2019 when the next Federal Election is due, we would still not be granted the Right to Marry.
Thank You, Malcolm Turnbull for enabling us to get Married.

    • The UK has gay marriage, no plebiscite or postal survey. New Zealand has gay marriage, no plebiscite or postal survey. In both cases, these things were introduced under a centre-right government very much the equivalent of our Liberal Party.

But according to you Australians can’t cope with this. Are we too stupid? Are we just too redneck? WHY DID WE NEED A POSTAL SURVEY???? Please explain.

Also Shorten voted for marriage equality in the House of Representatives in 2012. Turnbull voted AGAINST. Please remind me why he’s such a supporter of the community while Shorten isn’t? Why did Labor MP’s like Tony Burke who’s electorate voted No vote Yes, while Liberal/National MP’s like Tony Abbott, Barnaby Joyce and George Christensen vote No when their electorates voted Yes? You can’t explain these things other than homophobia.

      • Oops, correction, Abbott Joyce and Christensen abstained, not voted No, but were just as useless as if they had voted No so it’s a minor detail.

    • @Robert McCormick you are completely WRONG.

The record shows in 2012 Bill Shorten spoke out and voted in favour of marriage equality (Turnbull did not).

The record also shows Shorten is the first major political party leader to march in Mardi Gras. Turnbull quaffs the champers in the VIP section, but has NEVER marched in Mardi Gras, even though it occurs in his electorate!

We can blame Turnbull for forcing the optional postal survey – but we cannot thank him for change in law!

  6. Maybe the gay community would have preferred Abbot at the helm for the marriage debate. Turnbull allowed a conscience vote. Credit where credit is due. Gays need to grow up. Booing is so childish. Cher does not need to apologise
