Lambie hasn’t “given thought” to Russian treatment of LGBTI people

TASMANIAN聽Palmer United Party Senator Jacqui Lambie has praised Russian President Vladimir Putin’s leadership style but has stopped short of endorsing his treatment of LGBTI people.

Speaking to media earlier today, Lambie rebuked comments by Prime Minister Tony Abbott when he said聽he would 鈥渟hirtfront鈥 Putin at the upcoming G20 summit in Brisbane.

Later, the senator told ABC’s聽Radio National that she admired the Russian President.

“Yeah, I do like Vladimir Putin,” she said.

“I think he has very strong leadership. He has great values.

“He’s certainly doing his bit to stamp out terrorism and I guess you’ve got to pay the man for that.”

In a media statement issued this morning, the senator said that Putin had 鈥渋mpressed鈥 her with his 鈥渘o nonsense attitude鈥 to extremist Islamic threats and called on Abbott and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten to act like leaders.

鈥淪top acting like hormone affected school-boys trying to out macho each other on the footie (sic) field,” she said.

鈥淎nd unlike most Australian political leaders there鈥檚 no BS about [Putin].鈥

On whether Lambie鈥檚 admiration for Putin also extended to his government’s treatment of LGBTI citizens, the senator said that she never thought of聽the issue.

鈥淧utin鈥檚 values I specifically reflected on this morning were in relation to his leadership against the threat that Islamic terrorism,鈥 Lambie told the Star Observer.

鈥淏ecause of the unprecedented economic, social and security crisis which faces Tasmania 鈥斅營 haven鈥檛 given thought to Mr Putin鈥檚 relationship with Russia鈥檚 LGBTI community.

鈥淎lthough I have, because of the unprecedented threat posed by Islamic fanatics to all Australians, including LGBTI people 鈥 given thought to the way they (Islamic fanatics) at every chance persecute, torture or kill gay and transgender people simply because of who they are.鈥

Lambie went on to say聽that she did not support Russia鈥檚 anti-gay 鈥減ropaganda鈥 laws championed by Putin.

鈥淚 only support one law and that鈥檚 the Australian law 鈥斅爓hich offers protection against discrimination for all citizens regardless of sexual orientation, age, race or religion.

鈥淟GBTI people are a very important minority group in our society. Like all peace loving Australians, they should be protected 鈥斅燼nd should never be discriminated against because of their life choices or sexuality.鈥

Despite this, Lambie has previously been quoted by Crikey that she does not support marriage equality.

  1. Well I finally found that Tasmanian with two heads one on her shoulders and the other stuck up her ass

  2. Your headline is a clear misrepresentation of her position. I thought your job was to report ‘news’, rather than making everyone who fails to understand the nuances of Russian politics out to be a homophobe.

    • The story is about the comments she made today about Putin. The story is not about her wider position on LGBTIQ rights. The headline is bang on.

  3. Of course she hadn’t. She’s an uninformed dimwit. With all her opinions on other issues it really wouldn’t surprise me if she was a homophobe as well.

    • We need a minimum education and work experience criteria for politicians. Like all professionals… Lawyers, drs, accountants etc

  4. just how much ”thought” has Jacqui actually given to anything that sprouts from her mouth? (legit question)

  5. Well in order to give thought one would have to possess them in the first place. There is nothing but vacuum between those ears!

    • No not every woman…only those that are supposed to be “honorable” yet go around in front of the media saying they like “well hung” men…

  6. Yes she’s a stupid cow, but – surprise, surprise – the rest of the world doesn’t think about gays all the time. This is hardly a story.

  7. We the taxpayers are giving this dope $4,000 + a week for the next 5 years and a substantial super after, the system is broken.
