Conservative ‘mummy blogger’ attacks Sydney drag queen for reading to children
An Australian ‘mummy blogger’ known for her anti-LGBTI politics has attacked a drag queen for reading to children in a community program.
Marijke Rancie, known as Political Posting Mumma, wrote on her Facebook page that she was “shocked” to hear about Sydney drag queen Hannah Conda reading to kids at in Erskineville, an event intended to teach about diversity while encouraging a love of reading.
While Rancie’s post was mild in its content, some of her followers reacted viciously.
“The frightening thing is that children cannot tell how sick this is,” wrote one person.
Another alluded to child abuse.
“This is child grooming,” they commented.
“The bright showy colours are a front for a world of darkness and depravity that should be kept in the ‘adults only’ section of our community.”
Others called drag queens “disgusting”, “freaks” and “perverted”.
Despite all the homophobic and transphobic comments, some people rushed to defend Hannah and the reading program.
“Online bullying is not welcome,” wrote one person.
“You don鈥檛 have the first clue about the LGBTIQ+ community or the art of drag, and if you want to keep your head in the sand, do so by not attending.”
Organiser Jolene Evans also weighed in.
“We鈥檝e had three very successful events so far and it鈥檚 pretty simple: if you don鈥檛 like it, don鈥檛 take your child,” she posted.
“We are about diversity… a far cry from online bullying like yourself. What is it you are teaching children: bullying, hate?”
Hannah told that she was upset by the aggressive and offensive comments made by Rancie’s followers.
“I spiralled into a place where I felt unsafe, uncomfortable and really sad for the world,” she said.
“So it鈥檚 safe to say the last 48 hours have been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster.”
Hannah extended an invitation to Rancie to attend a drag event to educate herself.
“If she allowed herself to open up and see our side of the world, maybe she would be able to have some empathy and realise we are just people like her,” Hannah said.
The blogger declined the invitation, claiming her safety would be at risk.
“I couldn鈥檛 possibly take her up on that kind offer after many of her supporters have threatened violence against myself, my friends and my children,” she said.
Rancie was the centre of controversy last year after LGBTI youth group Minus18, calling it a “disgusting program”.
She publicly shared photos of one of the group’s youth workers in an attempt to shame her.
“We deplore abuse and harassment in any form, and our mission is to stand up against the daily queerphobia that our most vulnerable experience,鈥 said CEO Micah Scott at the time.
鈥淭he use of a Minus18 staff member鈥檚 personal images by an anti-LGBTIQ page is a continuation of the same sinister tactics used during the anti鈥揝afe Schools and marriage equality campaigns.”
I’ve always regarded the Tory politics she spews out as unfit for children. Actually, unfit for anyone.
Maybe if these ultra-conservative, self-styled “Good Christians”, most of whom haven’t got a Loving, Compassionate cell in their bodies, bothered with their children and read to them themselves instead of shoving them in front of the TV, or putting some sort of electronic gadget in their hands so as to entertain themselves the GLTBIQ Community would not need to go an Read to their children.
As Bryan, above, says, children don’t bother about Adult issues. They love to see the gaudy costumes, the over-the-top make-up, the Theatre of it all.
I know my brothers, sisters, nieces & nephews would rather leave me (No, I don’t “Frock Up!) with their small children than with some mealy-mouthed cleric or Church Lay Worker.
Why?
Because they all know that their children are SAFE with me. They KNOW their children are not going to be physically or sexually abused.
Can all those oh-so-pure, oh-so-god-fearing people say the same when they leave their children with that Ordained man/woman or that “nice lady who does the flowers at the church”?
They simply cannot.
This woman doesn’t seem to realise that it is her husband, the children’s Father, her brother, aunt, the local Priest who is far more likely to sexually, physically and mentally abuse her and other people’s children.
Surprise! Surprise! The vast majority of GLTBIQ Men and Women abhor the idea of sex with children.
GLTBIQ men & Women want to have sex with other GLTBIQ – and the odd straying heterosexual – ADULTS.
A reminder people – whenever you hear someone say we no longer need Mardi Gras and that gay people have full equality already – people like this are a reminder the war against homophobia and ignorance has a long way to go.
What a sad person she is! Children don’t judge or concern themselves with sexual identity they like to giggle at costumes and make up. If it helps then develop an interest in reading fantastic.
As someone who grew up in the sixties I was dragged to many a suburban BBQ with my parents. Some of their friends were a tad more colourful than others. I can still remember raucous laughter from the adults and squeals of delight from the kids when a drag queen did an impromptu number. The only thing those adults worried about was the amount of joy the kids had.
This woman has a long history of posting anti LGBTQI propaganda. She is very clever and lets her fans do all the hate work but she is the one pulling the strings. If you try to debate her or not agree with her then she blocks you and then her fan pages take over and post hate about you. She is a very dangerous woman hell bent on getting anything to do with LGBTQI banned
This person clearly doesn’t understand the art of drag nor the intentions that this event has. This is not depraved or disgusting and, being a victim of child abuse myself, I find it extremely offensive that people allude to child abuse.
As for the event itself, I applaud the organisers and Hannah Conda for doing something fun and inspiring to teach children about diversity. Keep on being fabulous, you wonderful darling!
Evil old trout.
