The Australian Christian Lobby has launched an attack on anti-bullying program Project Rockit, which promotes inclusion and diversity to young people.

In the past week, the ACL’s objections to Project Rockit, and particularly the queer people who help run it, have formed part of an article in聽The Australian as well as as a blog post on the organisation’s website.

It comes after Project Rockit formed a $1 million partnership with Facebook and Instagram to curb the epidemic of online bullying.

The Australian names Project Rockit co-founders Lucy and Rosie Thomas as well as Head of Programs Dani Weber, who is non-binary and performs as drag king Dani Boi.

The article claims that Project Rockit promotes “contentious gender theory” and cites ties to Minus18 and “the Safe Schools anti-bullying program.”

“It almost feels like we鈥檙e not just sisters. We鈥檙e allies, we鈥檙e co-founders, and we鈥檙e activists.”

“Project Rockit isn鈥檛 an LGBTI organisation,” Lucy told聽The Australian in response to the ACL’s accusations.

“We deal with cyber safety, promoting 颅online safety. It鈥檚 very difficult to address these without addressing… homophobia, racism and ableism.”

The ACL since doubled down in a blog post on their website, with Managing Director Martyn Iles stating, 鈥淲e have been contacted by concerned parents about this organisation repeatedly.”

“Many of them are alarmed聽by聽the overtly ideological agenda being pushed聽onto their kids聽by these activists.

“Most parents would be rightly outraged if they knew the political and ideological agenda behind this anti-bullying organisation.”

Project Rockit’s website states its goal throughout its ten years has been “empowering聽school students to stand up to hate instead of standing by watching.”

“Through the lens of (cyber)bullying, our workshops explore themes of diversity, belonging, respectful relationships, values and ethics, while building student voice, leadership and empathy.”

  1. The ACL are the type of Christians who take the story of the woman caught in adultery whom the Pharisees wanted stoned to death, at which Jesus spoke to them his famous line “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone”; and conclude “But, but she still SINNED! Jesus told her to go and sin no more!!” Pathetic.

  2. What an embarrassment the ACL are to Christians who think the central message of Jesus was to love one another, not be judgemental and to look out for the oppressed and victimised.

To repeat a gag I recently coined about the Sydney Anglicans, these guys would have you believe that the parable of the good Samaritan was not a statement about prejudice and anti-discimination in general, they reckon it was literally contained to refer only to Samaritans.

There are many religious people in most denominations who support marriage equality and gay/trans rights more broadly. What is the ACL doing to represent this significant group? Not a majority perhaps in the case of some major churches but certainly a substantial proportion of the congregation in many.
