Massive poll response on ‘marriage eve’

Hundreds of thousands of votes have been lodged in an Australian Labor Party (ALP) social media poll on marriage equality.

The huge response comes just a day before federal MPs are due to speak in Parliament on the same-sex marriage views of their electorates.

The ALP Facebook account asked users ‘Should Same-Sex Marriage be legal in Australia’. Nearly 200,000 votes have been lodged in the poll, with a clear majority in favour. At current count there are 161,150 ‘yes’ votes and only 34,356 opposed.

MPs will report back to parliament tomorrow, August 24, following a motion put forward by Greens MP Adam Bandt in November last year calling on Lower House MPs to seek out the views of their electorates on the issue.

Voters wishing to engage their local member on the issue now have only a limited amount of time to do so. Lobby group GetUp! has a list of MP contact details should you still wish to make your views known before tomorrow’s special session.

  1. teh social media results is good. OF course we know that younger people support their gay friends, and social media is used by the younger.

But the beauty of it is that the younger people will be the next leaders and majority.

Its all over for the bigots and the churches for whom Jesus commanment to love thy neighbor as thyself is used to hate thy gay neighbor and demonize him.

The bigots will end up in the bad hot place they deserve. Where they can make common cause with bin laden and no one will care.

As the people said during the struggle to give full rights to the black people of America – for the bigots, burn baby burn.

And re the catholic church and its opposition to gay marriage, well why hasn’t it yet EXCOMMUNICATED THE WORST MURDERER IN HISTORY, dead or alive?

A man born and baptised catholic in very catholic Austria (Lintz) in 1888.

  2. Finally people that can think for themselves! Why can’t the Americans learn about social skill the Aussie have instead of slick technology in the ‘States. What a novel bunch of people.
A small minority in the USA have kept who have rich bigoted backers removed the right to marriage in the largest state. California, in the USA, with the infamous “Proposition 8”. Too many bigots with deep pockets control the American government and have forgotten that it is the people who matter, ALL the people.

  3. Come on Australia. It’s time to back equality of marriage choice for all our fellow Australians. We can do this! Just get this iover and done with please.

  4. Fingers crossed that Demos Kratos actually works… the only problem I have is that it looks like the Gillard government will get kicked out soon enough and then we have to fight the Lib Party and Tony Abbott for the equal rights of our gay bro’s and sisters.
