Legal support for marriage equality
Members of the National Association of Community Legal Centres (NACLC) have voted in favour of marriage equality at their annual conference in Hobart today.
350 delegates unanimously voted in favour of a resolution calling for the NACLC to write to the Gillard Government to urge change to allow same-sex couples to marry.
Australian Marriage Equality spokesman Rodney Croome 鈥� who spoke at the event – said the vote indicates strong support for marriage equality in the legal sector.
鈥淎ustralia鈥檚 CLCs [Community Legal Centres] have always played an important role in law reform and legal advocacy and today they continued that important role by endorsing marriage equality,鈥� Croome said.
Croome said a change to the Marriage Act would be a step forward for a fairer Australia.
鈥淢arriage equality is not only about removing discrimination,鈥� he said.
鈥淚t is also about ensuring our laws are based on values like fairness and equity.鈥�
