Greig in leadership race
Former Australian Democrats senator Brian Greig is in the running to take over as national president of the party.
He will run against incumbent president Darren Churchill for the top job.
Greig is well known for speaking out on LGBTI issues and was the first gay activist to be elected to federal Parliament.
Greig held a seat in the Senate for seven years, eventually losing his spot in 2004 to the Greens’ Rachel Siewert.
Ten candidates have nominated for the deputy position, with some throwing support behind Greig as the party’s best chance to secure a Senate seat at the next federal election. Postal ballots have been sent out to party members and are due back by 10pm, July 14.

Honestly, I would rather vote for the Democrats than the Labor/Greens/Liberal/National cesspit we’re stuck with now. These guys were the first political party to start talking about marriage equality. They actually have some great ideas.
Good luck to Brian Greig, I hope he can turn the party’s fortunes around. A true socially progressive liberal party is really needed in Australian politics.
Actually, as soon as we can get the Australian Democrats back into Government the sooner we can stop the rot.
Also, I believe to be a registered political party you have to have 500 members registered with the AEC.
Bring back the Australian Democrats and Keep The Bastards Honest.
In fact, there are 16 total candidates in this executive election. This isn’t to mention non-elected positions and state executives.
The Democrats are certainly in a pretty good position, and I thought anyone would be willing to see a socially progressive AND economically responsible party find every success in upcoming elections.
The AEC has proven they’re not dead. Reality shows they’re not dead. All that’s left is the election test, and the day when 0 people vote Democrat. Until that day, the debate should be on policy – not political spin to try and keep them down to keep letting the bastards win the war.
Seriously, there are two people wanting to be President of the Democrats…and ten running for Deputy?? That must be the entire membership of the Australian Democrats.
It’s dead; give it a burial and move on.
