The Matrix Fan Theory Confirmed By Lilly Wachowski
When The Matrix came out it took many by surprise and to this day is still considered by many, to be the best sci-fi film ever made. Recently though it has taken on even greater meaning with Lilly Wachowski confirming the film is an allegory for the trans experience.
In a YouTube video addressed to fans of the series听Wachowski said, in response to a question posed about this Matrix fan theory, that she was 鈥済lad that it has gotten out that that was the original intention.
鈥淚 love how meaningful those films are to trans people, how people come up to me and say that these 鈥榝ilms have saved my life.鈥
鈥淭he world wasn鈥檛 quite ready yet,鈥 Wachowski continues.听鈥淭he corporate world wasn鈥檛 ready for it.鈥
听Lilly, and her sister Lana both came out as trans after the films were released.听Lilly herself first alluded听to that possibility of The Matrix being a trans allegory in the acceptance speech for a 2016 GLAAD award for her Netflix series,听Sense8.
She said the Matrix听series was about a 鈥渄esire for transformation, but it was all coming from a closeted point of view.鈥
She described Switch, 鈥渁 character who would be a man in the real world and then a woman in the Matrix,” as representative of where her and her sister鈥檚 鈥渉eadspaces were鈥 when they were making the films.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 know how present my transness was in the background of my brain as we were writing it,鈥 Wachowski said, 鈥渂ut it all came from the same sort of fire that I’m talking about.鈥
In exciting news for fans of The Matrix franchise the fourth听instalment is slated for a 2022 release and will be听directed by Lana Wachowsk.
