Love, duels, deception and mysterious strangers – this is 18th-century French (soap) opera.听L鈥檃mant Jaloux听was a triumph when it was first听presented in Versailles in 1778.
[showads听ad=MREC]Told over听one sweltering听Spanish summer day and night, L鈥檃mant jaloux听is the story of the insanely jealous Don Alonze who mistakenly assumes he has competition vying for the favour of the same lady Le虂onore -颅 听but does he? In classic French farce, expect mistaken identities, mysterious strangers, true love, duels and a happy 听ending.
This is an ensemble opera, with glorious orchestral colours and witty ensemble pieces infused with melodic richness and charm. Each aria has its own shape and colour.
The virtuosic Erin Helyard directs the 听Orchestra 听of 听the 听Antipodes 听on 听period 听instruments. 听He says: 鈥淚 have always been an enormous fan of Gre虂try ever since I started reading his Me虂moires. He was one of the greatest composers of opera comique and I felt that Sydney audiences deserved to experience his unique approach to the text and the voice. 听L鈥檃mant jaloux听was one of his most popular works and is full of touching ariettes and quick-颅paced and ingenious ensembles. Known for his bold and inventive productions as well as acute musical instincts, Helpmann Award-nominated 听director Chas Raider-颅Shieber leads an acclaimed cast of gifted comic singers including international artist Ed Lyon next to homegrown talents Alexandra Oomens and David Greco.
This evening of sparkling summer entertainment will be the Australian premiere of L鈥檃mant jaloux and is not to be missed.
