WHAT’S ON (Sydney): Trans* is Trending

Walkley-nominated journalist and SBS Mardi Gras presenter Patrick Abboud will host a screening of Laurence Anyways, directed by Canadian director Xavier Dolan.

The film is about an award-winning novelist who teaches literature at a Montreal high school. Passionately in love with his girlfriend Frederique, he reveals to her on his 30th birthday that he’s spent his life feeling like a woman trapped inside a man’s body.

Laurence Anyways follows the title character’s transformation, the reactions from friends, family, coworkers and loved ones. Though set, as always, in the distinctive cultural milieu of Dolan’s hometown of Montreal, the issues of gender and identity explored in Laurence Anyways have universal relevance.

This film won the Queer Palm at Cannes in 2012, with Suzanne Clément also winning the Un Certain Regard Best Actress Award for her portrayal of Frederique.

Abboud will be joined in conversation before the screening by special guest Calpernia Addams, a renowned American trans* activist, actress, musician and LGBTI icon.

Addams will share her own inspiring personal story of transition, as well as discuss the change in the way trans* stories are being represented in mainstream media.

There will be an opportunity for a short Q&A from the audience.
