Your thoughts are your own
“You may give them love, but not your thoughts, for they have their own thoughts…”
My sons edify me, usually just by breathing, but this weekend they took it up a notch. We were debating the colour spectrums of light sabres and we came to the purple-hued sabre. They knew there was only one of its kind.
“So guys, who owns that one?” I asked them.
“I know, Dad! He’s the guy with no hair, he sits next to Yoda,” Beau responded. Chicky nodded himself into a ‘yes’ frenzy. “Yeah, he’s the one, with none hair.”
Samuel L Jackson is the man in question. I appreciated that their eyes only saw his hair was missing as the key feature in picking him out.
Later on the swings, talk moved to, of all things, circumcision.
“Dad, a boy at school had his willy cut,” Beau offered new intelligence mid-swing.
“How, Beau? Did he go to hospital?” I asked.
“Nah, we saw it at the toilet.”
“Did you guys say anything to him, or tease him?”
“No,” shaking his head.
“You know everyone is different, guys and we don’t tease or upset anyone for that,” I convinced myself.
“Yeah Dad, I was just telling you,” he smiled.
The boy in this scene is a close friend of Beau’s, so I knew it was curiosity that had piqued his interest in this topic.
As I tucked my little men into their beds and rubbed noses with them, I thought about how some children have such clear views of others around them. The boys have a friend who has two mums, so I will wait for them to ask me about that at the seesaw.
Kahlil Gibran’s thought-provoking words are so fitting and today I’m so grateful my sons have their own.
