Considering they are both actually stuffed toys, it would make the idea of which one “bites the pillow” a bit confusing.
Big bird is the one that screams out “closet queen “ to me …All those feathers…Maybe it’s really a drag queen? After all think about how he “flaps his wings” !But I concede there are no sequins.

Maybe the whole of Sesame Street is gay ? Has anyone done a police check on Mr Snufflelupogis ?

Does the cookie monster have a WORKING WITH CHILDREN LICENCE ?

Oh My Lord, I’ve just thought of something ! Gilligan’s Island.

The skipper and his little buddy slept in hammocks in their own room — were they ?….oh goodness…

When they went over to the “other side of the island” was it WHERE THEY SECRETLY MET UP WITH THE PROFESSOR ?

Why can’t we argue to have them gay married ?

Were they hammocks or slings and why were they always interested in Maryanne’s cream pies ? That’ always got them excited ! Was it their “gay joke?”

Now Bugs Bunny …he always got into drag ….

Then there’s our own Playschool with the opening theme ” There’s a bear in there” Need I say more ?

Yes, it’s all fun and it gets us into the spirit of talking about gay marriage.

However, I seem to recall when there was talk of having a video image of two mothers for one child, the right moralists objected to it because it was sexualising the toddlers even though this society is full of modern families with two mothers or two fathers whether they be gay or straight.

They fought that proposal on Australian tv even though it was helping kids understand we don’t live in John Howard’s world of the 1950’s when this was all denied.

All’s fair in love and war and the pursuit of equality.

I have young children who adore Sesame Street and it would be great for them to see another family (preferably a human one) just like theirs.

However…

When it comes to Bert and Ernie, whether they are gay, whether they are a couple, whether they should get married… jokes and innuendo aside, as a writer myself I believe in the absolute right of a creator to define their world and the characters in it. So if the creators of Sesame Street say that they are just friends, then we should respect that.

It doesn’t mean Sesame Street is homophobic or that they are holding double standards. It certainly doesn’t mean they can’t introduce a gay couple or a gay family as part of the show. The long-running Archie comics recently did this; they added new a gay character and even gave him his own dedicated comic book. I thought that was great. (though, I still wish Betty and Veronica were together…ahh…)
