Happy Christmas! Oops … Mardi Gras!

Happy Christmas! Oops … Mardi Gras!

With one Christmas just finished and another about to begin, hasn’t the year gone quick! Though with this ‘Christmas’ there is no gift giving, no Santa, and no stockings to stuff.

This will be the first Mardi Gras with split events (parade and party) over consecutive weekends. Will it work? Will you be attending both? Or is it all just too hard?

For us here in western Sydney it is quite a distance into Oxford Street … and for two weekends in a row? No doubt I will suffer the travel and go to both. But by golly it had better be worth it.

The parade should be interesting if nothing else. This will be my first year marching as an independent personality and not as part of a group of drag queens. At least I can fill a camera lens on my own – some of the blessings of being more voluptuous I suppose.

The party is marked to be quite an event with many big names performing … supposedly this includes Kelly Rowland. Other rumours suggest George Michael and Whitney Houston.

But do we really care? Do we actually go to the party to see the shows? After decades of parties does any of it really matter? So long as we can all go and have a good time and be in an atmosphere of acceptance and celebration – isn’t that the main thing?

Mardi Gras has not forgotten western Sydney, though the events this year are terribly limited.

Returning to the Riverside Theatre for it’s third consecutive year is Mardi Gras Film Festival. Sadly there will be no opening night and sessions will only be held on March 5 and 6.

If only western Sydney would learn to support events out west then perhaps they would keep getting bigger and better … shame on some of you westie queers. If you’re going to live out here, at least support the events that run here.

Getting off my soapbox I can at least say with some level of positivity that the church is booked, the priest arranged and the bridal party confirmed. Yes – I’m getting married. The newest show at Heaven ‘Drags can hear the bells’ will feature wedding dresses, elegant bouquets, loss of my virginity and so much more.
So come along to celebrate with your valentine on Saturday February 13 at the Northmead Bowling Club.
