Some of the very same people who were saying it was bullshit that I couldn’t play AFL Women’s league were some of the same voices within the team who were trying to dictate where I could shower and change. While those people then were supposedly in my corner as I fought the AFL, they were more than able to justify their own position about me to themselves because in their minds “they aren’t like those people, this is a reasonable thing to expect”.’

This shows precisely how seriously some of Mouncey’s teammates took the suggestion that a) Mouncey is really a woman, just like they are and b) male athletes, who now identify as women, don’t tend to have a physical advantage over female athletes. The players had no issue with Mouncey playing for their team, because they knew that a male player gave the team a physical advantage. But they didn’t want Mouncey in their changing rooms or showers, because they did not seriously believe that she’s a woman and functionally no different from them.

A quick perusal of Mouncey’s twitter reveals some very nasty comments, and I’m not trying to argue that trans women (like many, many other groups) are relentlessly bullied in some corners of the net. But it doesn’t mean they’re functionally identical to women. It doesn’t mean women have to roll over for them.

I went out of my way to make sure that I didn’t make anybody feel at all uncomfortable by my presence in the locker rooms/showers. If someone had voiced a complaint, I would have compromised. I’d have been hurt and offended, but I would have accommodated them, for two reasons:
1. My primary commitment is to the team. It’s a team sport. We play as a team. If there’s something that I can do individually to ensure the health of the team, I will do it.
2. My secondary commitment is to the sport. Nothing will stop me from playing my sport, and there are compromises to be made to ensure I still get to be there.

So how about you? Is your commitment to your team? To your sport? Or to push your own agenda?

There are compromises to be made, and if you insist that you shouldn’t have to compromise, that doesn’t make you brave – that makes you selfish, no matter how you identify.
