It’s important that we share the stories from our gaytastic lives. I’ve been a thoroughbred dyke all my life and knew it all too well growing up. In part I found it easy to be myself because our school motto was truth, so I am simply living the truth of my life and who I am. Looking back as an adult there were many early indicators. I enjoy early memories of my blonde bikini clad swim teacher and other truly gorgeous women including my sports teachers, one of whom I later bumped into out on the local scene. I had a generally happy early life without bullying although I know other gays who have shared stories similar to yours. Bullying is not acceptable. Coming out to my family was challenging so I only did so when I thought I had found my life partner. In recent years some of my family members made my life very difficult for some time and I think it’s because of their discomfort with who I am, sort of like a delayed effect because they did not arc up when I first came out. Indeed when I first came out my family mostly said they already knew I was a lesbian, they were just waiting for me to say something, which made the later life troubles they caused me all the more disappointing and painful. On the positive news side I enjoyed a very successful media career before shifting to other realms and my partner and I of 7 years are engaged and shall likely venture to New York to tie the knot next year. We have marched for marriage rights (first time we ever marched for anything apart from Labour Day) and we would sign a civil registry in Australia if we could however there’s no sense waiting around for the law to catch up with the reality of our relationship.
