September election about marriage: AME
Marriage equality advocates have vowed to make the September 14 election about marriage equality as the country鈥檚 peak body says it will lobby key electorates.聽Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced she would be asking Governor General Quentin Bryce to hold the next federal election on September 14 during her Press Club speech last week.
Australian Marriage Equality national convenor Rodney Croome said AME would be targeting key electorates to both urge a Liberal Party conscience vote and greater support from Labor candidates and MPs.
鈥淭he past 12 months has proven Australians are more engaged with this issue than ever before and are keen to make themselves heard at the ballot box,鈥� Croome said.
鈥淭he lesson from last year鈥檚 US election is that support for marriage equality is a vote winner, especially among young people.鈥�
AME will survey all candidates about their views on marriage equality.
鈥淛ust as the 2010 election saw marriage equality move to centre stage in Australian politics, the 2013 election will see it become a key vote winner for those who support it,鈥� he said.
