NZ MP urges reform
New Zealand National MP Maurice Williamson has written an open letter to Australian politicians urging them to “be ye not afraid” of legalising gay marriage.
In a letter that was published on ճԹ Limited sites last week, Williamson called New Zealand’s legalisation of gay marriage “something Kiwis can be proud of” and said that “change is coming” to countries that are “holding out” on the issue.
“You might have seen there was rioting in France after they passed similar legislation. Not in New Zealand. People just carried on with their lives, as I suspected they would. Now if that’s what the prophesised ‘gay onslaught’ looks like then we’ll take it every day and twice on Sundays,” Williamson said in the letter.
The Pakuranga MP achieved fame in April when his speech urging fellow Parliamentarians to vote in favour of a gay marriage bill went viral, drawing praise from gay rights organisations and celebrities worldwide.
Williamson recounted how he had received hurtful and threatening letters after the video gained mainstream attention, with some constituents contacting him expressing hope that “my family would get AIDS and die”.
