Doing health, the diverse way

Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Health Mark Butler will launch Health In Difference, Australia鈥檚 largest conference devoted to GLBTI health.

Doing Diversity is the theme for the seventh Health in Difference conference, to be held in Sydney, starting this Thursday and running till Saturday, May 1.

Bringing together experts from a range of health areas 鈥 mental and sexual health, alcohol and drug abuse specialists, Indigenous workers and trans and intersex advocates 鈥 the ambition is to provide a holistic look at LGBTI communities and the impact social exclusion has on them.

Presented for the first time by the newly-formed National LGBT Health Alliance, there are hopes the conference will increase awareness of GLBTI health issues in the mainstream.

鈥淎ustralians pride themselves on giving everyone a fair go and it鈥檚 important that Government and mainstream services work with the LGBTI sector to ensure they are socially inclusive,鈥 Alliance executive director Gabi Rosenstreich said.

鈥淭his year鈥檚 conference is all about how individuals and organisations can better equip themselves for 鈥榙oing diversity鈥, to respond to the needs of LGBTI people.鈥

Presenters at the conference include the Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion, Senator Ursula Stephens; Western Australian senator Louise Pratt; Dr Ruth McNair of the Victorian GLBTI Ministerial Advisory Committee; and CEO of the Public Health Association, Michael Moore.

Online registration for the event is now closed, but it is still possible to register on the day.
