Archives open day

The Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives (ALGA) will open their doors to the public this weekend.

The Archives have been collecting and preserving documents, audio, video and newspaper clippings on Australia鈥檚 queer history since 1978 and have the largest library of historical material on homosexuality in Australia.

The open day is at the Victorian AIDS Council in South Yarra this Sunday, July 4, from 2鈥5pm.

The VAC recently provided the Archives with new storage space. The display will include some recent acquisitions including two rare books featuring Australian lesbians artists Janet Cumbrae Stewart and Agnes Goodsir.

Both artists worked in the early 20th century and their collection of female nudes and portraits has been described as 鈥渄elicate鈥.

The open day will also feature images by photographer James Spence.

Spence worked in the gay press in the 鈥70s and 鈥80s as a news photographer for Gay Community 今日吃瓜 and OutRage. His photos capture many of the political rallies and gay community events of the time.

The Archives are always on the hunt for volunteers. Email [email protected]
