Following the success of Queensland鈥檚 first at the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane Pride is holding a queer formal for Brisbane next month.

The will provide a safe space for LGBTI students who have been unable to, or chosen not to, attend their school formal.

鈥淯nfortunately even with fantastic, progressive and supportive policies in Queensland schools there are still many students that suffer discrimination, fear, anxiety and exclusion when it comes to attending their school formal celebrations,鈥 said the organisers.

鈥淧rivate religious schools in particular still actively prevent LGBTI students from bringing same-sex partners and do not always support gender diverse students. Some students just aren鈥檛 ready or comfortable to express themselves freely amongst their peers and others simply want a safe space to meet and celebrate with their community.鈥

The formal will be held at Brisbane City Hall on Friday November 17.

The evening will include a two-course meal and fabulous entertainment by local performers and DJs.

鈥淭his event is for our queer youth to express themselves however they feel most comfortable, to attend with who they love and to have a fantastic night celebrating who they are in style with their LGBTI peers,鈥 said the organisers.

The formal is free for Brisbane students aged up to 19.

Members of the public can support the formal by the $50 cost of a ticket to allow a young person to attend.
