Trikone comes to Sydney
South Asian members of the GLBT community will have a new support group to look towards in the coming months as a Sydney chapter of Trikone is started.
Based on the principles established by the original San Francisco-based Trikone organisation, the Sydney chapter will be working to provide support to GLBT individuals of a South Asian background as well as work to raise this particular group’s public profile.
Trikone offers a supportive, empowering and non-judgmental environment where South Asians can meet, make connections and proudly promote awareness and acceptance of their sexuality in society, an Australian group representative said.
The group’s mission statement sets out a plan to bring people together, increase visibility and acceptance of GLBT choices in the South Asian community and to offer opposition to all forms of discrimination based on race, gender, class or sexual preferences.
Other plans include establishing a website to connect South Asian members of the GLBT community to other suport organizations and develop a PFLAG group to deal with the specific difficulties faced by South Asian families.
