Summer Gay Day to don red ribbons
Red ribbon merchandise will be sold at the new gay and lesbian outdoor music festival, Summer Gay Day, on 1 December this year.
Festival organisers have announced a partnership with the Red Ribbon Appeal to help raise money for World AIDS Day, which falls on the same day as the music festival.
Summer Gay Day’s Tim Duggan said the partnership would allow Red Ribbon Appeal organisers to spread their message and raise valuable funds.
“We’ve been speaking with the NSW World AIDS Day Advisory Committee and ACON over the past few months to determine the best way to help get their message across and raise crucial funds on the day,” Duggan said.
“We look forward to bringing the gay and lesbian community together in one place on World AIDS Day to celebrate a new event and make it easier for the Red Ribbon Appeal to target the community at the same time.”
Summer Gay Day, to be held in Centennial Parklands on 1 December, will feature three different entertainment areas and a broad variety of entertainment.
ACON marketing and fundraising director Jordana Blanks said the partnership to raise awareness and money for World AIDS Day was an appreciated opportunity.
“World AIDS Day not only serves as a reminder that preventing HIV is everyone’s business, but also provides an opportunity for people to make a difference by buying some Red Ribbon merchandise,” he said.
“So look out for the Red Ribbon volunteers at Summer Gay Day, grab your free condom and buy a ribbon or a wristband. All proceeds go towards ACON’s HIV/AIDS prevention, education and care and support work.”
The Red Ribbon Appeal is being given its own zone at Summer Gay Day to sell ribbons, distribute information and promote key messages behind World AIDS Day.
“World AIDS Day is a very important event and we want to support it with the respect, recognition and commemoration that it deserves,” Duggan said.
Summer Gay Day is on Saturday 1 December from noon to 10pm. Tickets are $79 plus booking fee from Hum Records Darlinghurst and Newtown, and Salt Clinic at Taylor Square.
