Drumattical
For the last couple of weeks, a mysterious kick-arse track called Feelin’ Kinda Strange has been super-promoted via 2JJJ high rotation. Neat, funk-edged, break beat-y and featuring an odd high-pitched, brassy vocal riff, the track has been em-braced as a kind of lovable fool of a song and has steadily prompted listeners to phone the station asking for further details. A bit of a fan of the tune myself, I was stoked to discover this week that Inertia Records had sent me the entire Drumattic Twins album. I was a little less stoked after listening to the thing. Before I continue, it should be noted that Drumattical is not, in my opinion, a bad album. This is straight-out 3am breaks with very few vocals and very little adornment -“ just big beats with a few sparse hooks. Great. It’s just that, you know -“ I want the candy. I want the album of goofy break-beat songs promised by Feelin’ Kinda Strange. I want the bimbo, the clown, the dog on the unicycle. I wanted a fucking Big Mac. If I wanted a prick tease I’d take 2 Many DJs.
