Bank doing it for the kids
Twenty10 will develop a new mentoring program for young people living in supported accommodation thanks to a grant from the Commonwealth Bank’s staff fund.
Newtown branch manager Karim Iqbal and two employees with associations with Twenty10, Andrew Chalmers and Troy Longworth, presented the $8,130 grant.
“A number of years ago I found myself in some troubles and I was lucky enough to find Twenty10. They helped me get back on my feet and work out what I wanted to do with my time,” Chalmers, who now works at the Newtown branch, said.
Twenty10 executive officer Meredith Turnbull said the types of skills that young people needed from mentoring were the kind usually taken for granted, such as grocery shopping, cleaning, and cooking balanced meals.
Not quite so balanced were the culinary creations by young participants of Claire’s Kitchen – chocolate mousse and cheese soufflés. This fundraising event at Slide on 17 October raised an additional $3,500 for Twenty10’s youth work.
