A king joins the queen
There comes a time in every old girl’s life where she needs to consider a little tidy-up. Gone are the years when a nip and a tuck were socially unacceptable. Back then you would be labelled that lady with the face so tight she looked like a snare drum, or the other one who could fart out her neck, if you even considered having anything lifted or put back to the place it once fell from.
So when I was told by my editor that we were all going in for the works revamp, I was jumping out of my tired old skin. Not only is Sydney Star Observer having the “Carlotta Treatment” but DragStar is growing into something new and more diverse.
As you can imagine, I am sitting so close to the edge of my ergonomically correct wheelie chair, it could be dangerous. Not only do we get a brand new name, but I get a partner in crime, representing my drag brothers – I am now joined by Hans Sparrow, who won DIVA Drag King of the Year a couple of years ago.
Sitting on our thrones as Drag King and Queen, we are hoping to try to cover anything and everything – nothing will be too shocking or scary for us. Well, let’s face it: the scary ones Hans can do; I’m the girlie one of course.
I was officially introduced to Hans as my co-columnist a couple of weeks ago at the Newtown Hotel when I was hosting crab racing. However, I did have to wait a little while for the official handshake because, at the time of introduction, I was on stage with 15 crabs running between my legs.
After formalities were exchanged, Hans asked for my advice about writing a weekly column for our community.
Sydney Star Observer has been the most amazing newspaper to write for and I should know – I have written for almost all of them. Creatively the team is very supportive, helping you through difficult subjects and standing by your opinions and views.
Writing a weekly article where you have to put yourself out there to be judged can be daunting. Sometimes I wonder why I put myself through it week after week. But the amazing support network at SSO – former editor Stacy Farrar and current editor Scott Abrahams, plus all the writers, advertising staff and columnists – really do give me the confidence to stick in there and keep trying.
Sure, the negative comments do come – many people often miss the point or just disagree – but the positive comments from the public and the SSO team really lift your spirits and give you the confidence to keep putting the big questions out there.
So with our eyes tightened and our bums lifted, I am happy and excited to welcome Hans to the team because I have no doubt he will do a fabulous job. To all my readers who have supported DragStar over the years, a huge thank you – I hope you enjoy our new direction.
