We don’t “tolerate” women, blacks, disabled, or any other minority group: we are all part of the weave of Australian society. You “tolerate” a co-workers body odour, until you all decide to gang up on them and get them fired. Because implicit in the idea of tolerance is the idea that it is conditional, and can be withdrawn at any time.
What’s imperative is inclusion, acceptance and even celebration of LGBTI people and our relationships, in society in general, and especially across the entire curriculum in every school. We won’t get that by begging our enemies for whatever crumbs they feel inclined to spare this week. In fact, we won’t get it by begging at all.
