Activists Peter and Bon to be honoured with lifetime achievement award

Activist couple Peter de Waal and Peter Bonsall-Boone, better known as Peter and Bon, are to be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2018 LGBTI Awards.

Bon this year after 50 years with Peter, during which the two were well known as committed activists for the LGBTI community.

Peter and Bon were foundation members of the Campaign Against Moral Persecution (CAMP), one of Australia鈥檚 first gay rights activist groups.

In 1972 they appeared on the ABC television show Chequerboard, sharing a kiss that was quite shocking to audiences in a time when homosexuality was still illegal.

This year they personally mailed a letter to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull imploring him to legislate marriage equality, so that they could be married before Bon died from an aggressive cancer.

Both Peter and Bon received the Order of Australia for their tireless activism.

The Lifetime Achievement Award further honours their work supporting and fighting for the LGBTI community.

Over 11,000 votes have already been received for the 2018 LGBTI Awards.
