Melbourne marriage forum to plot next steps
A forum in Melbourne on Thursday will help plot the next steps of the marriage equality campaign following historic moves in the ACT earlier this week which became the first state or territory in Australia to successfully legislate for same-sex marriage laws.
Deputy Greens leader Adam Bandt will be joined by Prahran Liberal MP Clem Newton-Brown as well as Australian Marriage Equality national director Rodney Croome at Monash University’s Law Chambers to discuss how best to proceed over coming months to see marriage equality recognised nationwide. Castan Centre director, Professor Sarah Joseph, will act as the evening’s moderator.
With laws for same-sex marriage passing ACT’s Parliament on Tuesday, Croome said the upcoming event will take a look at why Australia is lagging behind other countries like New Zealand, France and the UK when it comes to federal recognition of marriage equality.
鈥淭his achievement in Canberra adds to the accelerating momentum we鈥檝e built nationwide. Not only have we increased the support for marriage equality across all demographics through education and personal stories, but we have also worked closely with all parties to introduce state based legislation 鈥� and the year is not even over,鈥� he said.
鈥淏efore the end of 2013, we are working to add Tasmania and New South Wales as well.
鈥淲e know that together we can achieve marriage in more states, increase public support and political opportunities, and lay the groundwork for federal reform sooner rather than later.鈥�
