Madonna has hit back at critics for their comments on her appearance following her Grammy appearance, calling them ageist and misogynistic.聽

In an the singer called out critics for commenting on her physical appearance, stating that she had been 鈥渃aught in the glare of ageism and misogyny that permeates the world we live in鈥.聽

During her Grammy appearance, in which she introduced both Kim Petras and Sam Smith for their performance of 鈥淯nholy鈥, a close-up photo of her face had become viral.聽

The viral photograph led to a host of negative comments on her appearance, with users writing about how she had looked unrecognisable on her Instagram page. Other comments involved public speculation on further possibilities of her undergoing plastic surgery.聽

Madonna called the Grammys an 鈥渉onour鈥, where she was able to introduce Petras, as the world鈥檚 first out transgender woman to perform at the event, and non-binary singer Smith to the stage.聽

鈥淚 wanted to give the last award, which was Album of the Year, but I thought it was more important that I present the first trans-woman performing at the Grammys鈥 a history-making moment!! And on top of that she won a Grammy!!鈥, Madonna wrote on Instagram.聽

In her post, the singer uploaded a video of her backstage at the Grammys ceremony, where she was seen dancing with Smith, Petras and Cardi B.聽

鈥淚nstead of focusing on what I said in my speech which was about giving thanks for the fearlessness of artists like Sam and Kim- Many people chose to only talk about close-up photos of me taken with a long lens camera by a press photographer that would distort anyone’s face!!” she wrote.聽

Madonna was unapologetic about her appearance and the creative choices that she鈥檚 made throughout her career, adding that she had been provoked and critiqued by the media since she entered the entertainment industry.聽

Madonna described the criticism by the media as a 鈥渢est鈥 and that she was 鈥渉appy to do the trailblazing鈥, to lead the way for other women coming up in the music industry, so they鈥檇 have an 鈥渆asier time in the years to come鈥.聽
