Another council backs marriage
Hobsons Bay City Council last night resolved unanimously to lodge a submission to the Commonwealth in support of marriage equality.
It makes it the second Victorian local council to do so, after Hepburn Shire called on federal Parliament to legalise same-sex marriage in an overwhelming vote of support last month.
Hobsons Bay elected its first intersex Mayor last year, with City Councillor Tony Briffa (pictured) winning the top job.
The independent has been the driving force behind the municipality advancing on LGBTI issues since being elected to council.
Hobsons Bay has hosted events for Melbourne queer cultural festival Midsumma and developed an inter-council liaison group to look at LGBTI issues, including recommending local libraries stock queer literature.
Briffa announced the result of last night’s vote on his official Facebook page yesterday, saying he had “such pride” in the decision.
