ACT follows Tassie lead on marriage

The ACT Government is considering legalising gay marriage pending the outcome of a move to make it legal in Tasmania.

鈥淚f the Federal Parliament fails to legislate, we will examine what happens in Tasmania and be open to introducing at a similar change to the law in the ACT,鈥 ACT Deputy Chief Minister Andrew Barr told Star Observer.

鈥淚 would be advocating for the law to allow non-ACT residents to be able to come to the ACT to get married.

鈥淚 think the Tasmanian Premier has a legitimate point in relation to the economic opportunities from marriage equality.聽 It is certainly something I will pursue as ACT Minister for Economic Development and Minister for Tourism.鈥

Tasmanian Premier Lara Giddings believes allowing gay marriage could bring in as much as $100 million a year for the state鈥檚 economy.
