Game to combat HIV
A new game app that aims to help raise awareness and funds for HIV prevention has been released in Australia.
THRED, a free-to-play endless scrolling-style game set in a 3D world, was created by games developer Bitmonster with the support of Coca-Cola and HIV/AIDS charity RED to raise money towards lowering mother-to-child HIV infection rates to zero by the year 2015, as well as raise awareness about the disease itself.
The app raises money by way of in-game purchases that improve the player’s performance, with the funds going to charity The Global Fund to purchase retro-antiviral drugs that can reduce a pregnant HIV-positive woman’s chances of passing the disease onto her child by 98 percent. In game purchase prices match the cost of real-world doses of medicine – the largest purchase is worth $220, the equivalent of a full term’s worth of drugs.
