Day for Night returns to kick start Mardi Gras festivities

FOLLOWING last year’s success, Day For Night back this weekend to help launch Mardi Gras festivities with a party and showcase of installations by a collective of LGBT artists.

The weekend begins with a Friday night warehouse dance party reverberating to the beats of Stereogamus, a duo comprised of DJs Paul Mac and Jonny Seymour.

Partygoers and Mardi Gras guests are then invited to return to the space the following days to experience the artists’ performance exhibitions in the light of day.

Curated by Performance Space artistic director Jeff Khan and Emma Price of the Kingpins, Day For Night aims to explore queer space and time through the collision of live bodies.

“The live performance weekend that is Day for Night blurs the line between queer art and queer culture – by creating an exhibition that’s also a dance party, we’re exploring where our ideas about queer culture come from and how they can be re-shaped and re-imagined,” Khan said.

The lineup includes:

  • Visual artist Nell, who will paint a labyrinth for guests to navigate across the floor of Bay 17.
  • Bhenji Ra, who will team up with the Pioneers to explore culture of vogue-ing.
  • Techa Noble, who will invoke a queer incarnation of the Japanese deity Baku, devourer of dreams and nightmares, in a dance performance.
  • White Drummer, who will occupy a makeshift sound-proofed chamber and improvise a playlist of the sounds of her life.
  • Dance artist Matthew Day, who will fill the space with a new series of choreographic scores
  • Betty Grumble, alter ego of Emma Maye Gibson, who will occupy a petting zoo for feminine rituals.
